The green seaweed in this series is from the Ulva genus, also known as “sea lettuce,” because of its similarity to the plant that we eat. This is the most commonly found seaweed and is particularly abundant in the spring and summer when the shores are covered with a carpet of sea lettuce and you can smell the distinctive aroma of seaweed gently toasting in the sun.

This is one of my favorite seaweeds. I love both its rugged texture and the range of gorgeous reddish brown and maroon colors that are iridescent when wet. The scientific name is chondracanthus exasperatus. I found this along the rocky shores of the famous Santa Cruz surfing spot in Pleasure Point, known by locals as “the hook,” but you can find it all along the Pacific Northwest.

An assortment of various pink seaweed varieties in a muted palette of pastels that are so delicate they almost look like water colors, but they’re not. They are photo images of real seaweed with scientific names that sound like Greek goddesses: Delesseria Decipiens, Polyneura Latissima, Palmaria Mollis and Chondracanthus Canalculatus.
