Many people, myself included, haven fallen victim to the common misconception that recycling plastic is sustainable and reduces the need for making new “virgin” plastic. Not true. According to a Huff Post Green article, Plastic and the Great Recycling Swindle , by Lisa Kaas Boyle, “The process of melting plastics for recycling them weakens their polymer bonds. Virgin plastic must be added to the degraded plastic to make new products. So recycling plastics just increases the demand for more virgin petrochemical product.” In other words, recycling, rather than eliminating the problem with plastic pollution, only makes it worse.
